Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This policy was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly counts as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, because the restriction is tied to each visit, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, while others search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and likely scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for true fans and everyday enthusiasts as well.
