Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
