Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day as a different person. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
