The Merseyside club Will Not Change Attacking Style Despite Recent Slump, Insists Head Coach Slot
Liverpool's head coach has revealed that the team leadership agree with his assessment regarding the recent downturn and he has no intention of discarding their forward-thinking philosophy in search of a improvement. The head coach admitted that six defeats in seven outings was not good enough ahead of the weekend fixture with Villa.
Pressure Mounting During Tough Spell
The manager acknowledged the scrutiny was intense before his rotated squad exited the Carabao Cup against the London club. However, he maintained that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the Anfield hierarchy or football administration following a substantial investment of almost £450m.
"We share common perspectives," stated Slot, whose squad will encounter Los Blancos in the European competition and travel to Pep Guardiola's side in the domestic competition.
Team Strength Remains Unchallenged
Slot believes his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are all fit and all ready for the fixture list". He said that the transfer window acquisitions in talents including the German international and the Swedish striker, who is likely to miss out again against the Birmingham club through physical problems, had left the club "in a strong situation for the near future and the years to come".
Team Cohesion Issues
When questioned about why his team were struggling to integrate, he responded: "That's not particularly helpful. 'What's causing this?' I offer insights and people say I'm coming up with excuses. I can list several explanations why we are not winning as much or experiencing losses as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are insufficient justifications to have a results sequence as we had now."
- Regardless of whether I could list multiple factors
- When you are Liverpool you must avoid losses
- The reality is six out of seven
Defensive Numbers
Only the Clarets (21) have allowed more significant openings from normal situations this season than Slot's team (19). The first-place team, the Gunners, have faced two. Yet Slot denies the champions have been too open and asserts there is no basis to sacrifice his attacking principles for a cautious system after 10 games without a goalless performance.
"In my view we're not allowing many opportunities so I see no justification to change our playing style entirely but we have to enhance in preventing goals," he said.
Specific Instances
"Versus the Red Devils, how many openings did we give up? When playing Frankfurt when we were 3-1 up, we scarcely gave up a shot on target. In all the games we played until now we haven't conceded a many opportunities. Not at all. We do allow a somewhat more than the prior term but that has to do with us being behind early so you take a bit more risk. But typically I don't think that our problem is that we allow too many opportunities. Our problem is we are unable to finish the opportunities we generate."
