The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will initiate their Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the relatively straightforward entry for a competition taking place in the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.

City’s stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions match since May 2016, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the England side for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Championship Launch and Protest

The event was unveiled at an event in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from Uefa and the host FAs were barracked as they arrived the venue by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Banners were held up with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Timeline

The opening game of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature the Dragons if they make it.

Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be staged on July 9, 2028 with a start time at 5pm.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help engage a wider spectrum of audiences.

Participating Countries

The Irish team are due to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the standard process.

Locations and Playoffs

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.

The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.

Leadership Comment

“It will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we value about the football – its emotion and ability to unite individuals.”

More than three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
