The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
