Privacy on the Internet is an Mirage’: Australian Youth Faces Charges Over Alleged Mass Shooting Hoax in United States

An adolescent from NSW has been charged after allegedly making multiple prank calls to 911 operators – a practice known as “swatting” – wrongly stating active shooter situations were occurring at large commercial and educational institutions in the US.

The Australian federal police charged the teenager on December 18th. They claim he is a member of a purported loosely organised internet-based criminal group operating from behind computer screens in order to trigger an “urgent and major police response”.

“Frequently male youths between the ages of 11 to 25, are involved in offenses like swatting, doxxing and hacking to gain status, infamy and prestige in their online groups.”

In connection with the investigation, authorities took possession of multiple digital devices and an illegal weapon located in the teen’s possession. This seizure was executed by Taskforce Pompilid formed in the final quarter of 2025.

Officials Deliver a Clear Message

An acting assistant commissioner, speaking generally, cautioned that those thinking they can carry out offenses with an internet connection and anonymous accounts were on notice.

Australian police stated it initiated its probe upon receiving tip-offs from US federal agents.

A senior FBI official, from the FBI's international wing, stated that the “risky and resource-draining act” of hoax 911 calls put lives at risk and wasted essential public safety assets.

“This case proves that secrecy online is an myth,” he stated in a joint statement with the AFP.

He further stated, “We are committed to working with our Australian counterparts, our global allies, and tech companies to locate and bring to justice people who exploit digital tools to inflict damage to society.”

The accused faces multiple counts of communications-related crimes and an additional charge of illegal possession of a banned gun. The accused potentially faces up to fourteen years in a correctional facility.

“The police's duty (is|remains) to halting the harm and anguish members of these digital criminal groups are imposing on society, while laboring under the illusion they are hidden,” the official stated.

The youth was scheduled to be presented before a New South Wales juvenile court on Tuesday.
