The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
