In excess of 60,000 Escape Sudanese City Following Capture by Rapid Support Forces Paramilitary Group, UN Reports

As stated by the UNHCR, in excess of 60,000 individuals have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was taken over by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces recently.

Accounts suggest multiple executions and atrocities as paramilitary forces stormed the city after an 18-month blockade featuring starvation and heavy bombardment.

The exodus of those running from the fighting towards the community of Tawila, approximately 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had increased in the recent days, as stated by UNHCR representative.

They were describing horrendous accounts of atrocities, featuring rape, and the humanitarian group was finding it difficult to find sufficient housing and supplies for them.

Every child was suffering from undernourishment, she noted.

It is estimated that in excess of 150,000 people are presently unable to leave in el-Fasher, which had been the army's remaining stronghold in the western part of Darfur.

The RSF has rejected broad claims that the killings in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and mirror a practice of the Arab fighters targeting ethnic minorities.

Nevertheless the RSF has arrested one of its militiamen, Abu Lulu, who has been accused of on-the-spot executions.

The group distributed footage depicting the member's detention following identification that he was behind the death of numerous unarmed men close to el-Fasher.

Digital platform has acknowledged that it has suspended the account associated with Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had operated the account in his identity.

Sudan was thrown into a domestic fighting in April 2023 following a vicious contest for control began between its military and the RSF.

This has led to a famine and claims of genocide in the western Sudan.

In excess of 150,000 persons have died in the conflict around the country, and approximately 12 million have left their dwellings in what the UN has described as the world's largest humanitarian emergency.

The takeover of el-Fasher reinforces the territorial division in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in control of Sudan's west and much of adjacent Kordofan to the southern area, and the military holding the main city, Khartoum, the center and east along the coastal region.

The opposing sides had been collaborators - gaining control together in a coup in 2021 - but fell out over an globally supported proposal to move towards civilian leadership.
