Heavy Precipitation Worsen Situation for Uprooted Gazans, Officials Alert
Intense precipitation over the past week have worsened the precarious circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of uprooted civilians in the territory, as reported by aid organizations.
"Awful" Weather Poses Severe Dangers
A official described the weather overnight as "terrible", with precipitation so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"Last night was really terrible for the families. The heavy rains were so intense... And the winds were so strong," stated the official.
Authorities voice grave anxiety that children living in tents in damp garments will contract hypothermia and other illnesses.
Fatalities and Significant Damage
Health authorities have stated that one baby has died from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins triggered by the storms.
Additional accounts put a increased death toll. Officials said that several residential buildings had totally fallen and scores had been partly destroyed.
- Nearly 55,000 families harmed by flooding.
- More than 40 official safe spaces inundated.
- Countless residents required to relocate again.
Aid Efforts Seen as Not Enough
Groups have stepped up deliveries of shelter, blankets and clothing after the halt in hostilities began, but they stress there is still not enough aid entering.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to provide that relief and to hand it out, but the magnitude of the requirements is so immense that we are faced with thousands of people and minors who are really suffering nightly," warned one official.
Future Concerns and Truce Provisions
The second phase of the ceasefire encompasses proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of personnel, and other provisions.
Relief bodies have highlighted the need for "greater and continuous aid to meet pressing and future requirements."
The war was triggered by an offensive in late 2023. Subsequent military operations have resulted in a substantial number of lives lost in the region, based on medical figures.
