People rarely mention the concluding moment of the Ashes. It's the first that's famous. That wide that reaches the slip cordon, that cover drive for four, that dismissal, clean bowled! Concluding moments? I had to look them up. Moeen Ali slicing a drive behind to conclude a batting effort defeat in a meaningless match in 2015; Boyd Rankin being taken at slip off Harris, Boyd Rankin playing in his single Test at the tail-end of a rapid downfall in a comprehensive defeat that's been plentiful in 2014; a Harmison bouncer glancing off Justin Langer's shoulder for runs, the single four the Australian team manage in a pursuit they'll never get to make in 2005.

It separates between speculating how things will go, and knowing how they do. One certainty is, there's no assurance there will be a successful conclusion. Collectively, they have recorded some of the surprising successes, experienced some of the most embarrassing exits, scored some of the most improbable centuries, and secured some of the most remarkable exceptional bowling spells in the history of the English game.

Regardless of how this historic contest shakes out, they have been, in turn, amazing, unbelievable, unconventional, frustrating, and completely, unapologetically, unashamedly thrilling.
