Darren Lehmann Criticises English Fans for Abuse Directed at Steve Smith

Steve Smith batting

Steve Smith has appeared in 38 matches facing the English team and accumulated 3,436 runs.

England crowds ought to improve than the jeers they aim at Australian batsman Steve Smith, says former coach Darren Lehmann.

Smith, 36 years old, has been a regular target of songs and boos from England crowds in the wake of his involvement in the 2018's ball-tampering controversy.

Smith was sacked as captain and barred for a 12 months while Lehmann, who was cleared of any offense, stepped down as coach after the incident.

"The jeers you receive is every day," Darren Lehmann stated. "This is incredible."

"He is competing every day. It must be more difficult for him."

"In England they just don't forget. It's as if they have never done anything wrong in their life."

"It's just the ones that overindulge and behave like idiots."

Background of the Ball-Altering Incident

In a Test match against the Proteas, Smith admitted Australia's "team leadership" devised a scheme to interfere with the ball.

Ex- opener David Warner instructed batsman Bancroft how to employ sandpaper to scuff up the ball, and Bancroft was then spotted carrying it out by TV cameras during the match. The two players were also suspended along with Smith.

Aftermath and Ongoing Response

Smith came back after the ball-altering incident in the 2019 Ashes series match at Edgbaston Stadium and has been booed repeatedly ever since.

English supporters also base jeers on his emotional news conference in 2018.

"We made the error, acknowledge it and move on," Darren Lehmann said.

"You try to advance the as well as possible. You get recalled every day and this is part and parcel."

"Steve Smith can hold his head high with how he manages all of it."

"England's Barmy Army need to be more respectful than that. Many are and are largely positive of the proceedings in the sport."
