The child of ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being tried over remarks she published on digital networks in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her father.

A week of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and arson, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2bn).

She has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and faces accusations of encouragement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

History of the Case

The demonstrations were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the previous president's arrest for disobeying a court order to appear as a witness at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has consistently denied the charges against her, with her lawyer previously describing the prosecution's case as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly stated the charges against her were an bid to address political disputes with her parent after he founded his own political party and ran against the African National Congress.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the foundation, which said the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the former president and his relatives.

A small number of backers from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the testimony presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and lacks compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Social media comments from the past form the basis of the state's evidence
  • Deadly demonstrations in recent years resulted in major fatalities and monetary losses
  • The accused confronts multiple counts of provocation to unrest
  • Judicial proceedings are expected to carry on for multiple weeks

The court case continues as both sides present their evidence before the judge in what is anticipated to be a carefully observed legal battle with major policy implications for South Africa.
