Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

Astronaut during mission
Amanda Nguyen, a women's health researcher, was aboard the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
