American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official said.
